USANA Australia is excited to welcome professional netball player, Kate Shimmin, to Team USANA. Kate started netball at the age of 5 at Parafield Gardens Recreation Centre in Adelaide, South Australia. She would play there every Saturday morning and would then stick around and watch her sister play afterwards. Not only did she grow up playing netball alongside her sister, she followed in her footsteps all the way through to playing for the Adelaide Thunderbirds. Next year she will be competing at the 2017 Australian Netball Competition in her new team, the QLD Firebirds. She is very much looking forward to playing with fellow Team USANA athlete Gretel Tippet and believes the Firebirds have what it takes to win the competition.
Kate never wanted to be a professional athlete as such but from 2009 she knew she wanted to play at the very top of her netball game because of her deep love and passion for the sport. She has played over 5 years for the Adelaide Thunderbirds and in 2015 was awarded the Australian Netball League Player of the Year. In the near future Kate hopes to make the Australian Diamonds netball team and compete in the next Commonwealth Games.
Kate said she trains between 5-7 times and week either on the court or in the gym. In addition to that she is “also studying to be a teacher and working in retail” which means she is usually out of the house from early in the morning until late at night.
“Just like maintaining my healthy lifestyle, I believe being organized and disciplined is essential to the management of my schedule. My weekly diary is my bible and I write everything in it but I’m also being conscious not to be taking on too much.”
She believes that having a good balance between work, training, and her social life is the key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s not bad to set aside some time to reward yourself for all your hard work every once in a while.
“I maintain a healthy lifestyle through discipline and routine. I feel that it is very important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle but also believe that every now and then you should also treat yourself.”
Playing at a professional level doesn’t just happen. It takes extreme discipline, persistence and determination to push your body to the next level. This is something Kate can relate to as she adopts all these characteristics in her everyday routine in order for her to become the absolute best at what she does in every aspect of the sport.
“I stay focused by focusing on the little goals ahead of me. For example, doing the very best I can at the next training and getting the most out of each training session.”
Kate is very proud to be using USANA products to help enhance her performance and believes that they’re the best nutritional supplements for her.
“Natural talent can only take you so far, to really get to the next level you need to have a balance of hard work and determination. Also by having a balanced diet you are able to get the very most out of every training session you do. It is a combination of everything you do and your nutrition compliments your training.”
We wish Kate the best of luck for her next season and once again want to give her a very warm welcome to Team USANA!
